How to get the best from your interpreter
Your interpreters will be regarded as ambassadors for your organisation; and they will want you to succeed in your objectives. Get the best from them by following these simple steps:
Booking interpreters
- Book them as soon as you know you will need them. Good interpreters are in great demand.
- Be clear about the location, timing and duration of the interpreting. Be realistic. If you will probably need them for only two hours but it might be four, tell us.
Briefing
- Tell us as much as possible about:
- the subject matter of the meeting, seminar, conference or court case;
- the participants and their background;
- the desired outcome.
- Send us any relevant material - minutes of previous meetings, correspondence, presentations.
- Regard us as temporarily part of your team and take us into your confidence.
We will ensure all oral and written briefing is passed on to our interpreters.
Conduct of meeting
- Schedule time before the meeting to welcome your interpreters, introduce them to key players, go over with the briefing material with them and check their understanding of your objectives.
- Ensure they have breaks. Interpreting is an intensive intellectual activity. If possible schedule pauses of 15 minutes every 1½ hours.
- Remember, professional interpreters have studied for many years to become professionals. They have probably spent several hours preparing for your meeting. Treat them with respect and they will respond by working even harder for you.
