Our role as multilingual typesetters is to apply translated text to an already designed format while still maintaining the original layout and pagination. Many of our clients ask us to translate their publications, from brochures and magazines to posters and signage, and then typeset them using the original as a template.
Multilingual typesetting is converting your original designed file (probably created using QuarkXPress or InDesign) into other language versions. We are equipped with the experience, skills and software to lay out your publications exactly as you want them in any language, keeping everything as similar as possible by looking to change only the text itself.
Our specialist software enables us to work directly with your artwork and ensures that the translations are inserted correctly for each language. Some languages, such as French, have considerably more words than English so the translation text size may need to be altered. Similarly, Oriental languages are generally much shorter than English and this will also affect the layout. Arabic typesetting is particularly tricky for different reasons, partly due to the fact it reads from right to left and so the pages need to be “flipped”.
Our experienced team will then adjust the translated text to make it look as professional as the original without changing the pagination, style or overall look. Finally, we will provide you with a print-ready PDF of each typeset file, to your print specifications.
Mistakes can creep in when non-linguists attempt to typeset their own foreign language documents and these errors can be costly. Examples of mistakes include sentences or words broken incorrectly, corrupted characters, font issues and parts of paragraphs missed out.
Our software and experience enable us to take on the work for you and to ensure that mistakes do not occur. All files are checked by the translator before they are returned to you and this check is included in the typesetting cost. We have been perfecting multilingual typesetting for over 30 years and are accustomed to dealing with these projects.
“Translating directly into the InDesign files and typesetting helped speed up the process and ensure that the foreign language versions retained the feel and design of the original.”
Feel free to give us a call or send over an e-mail and one of our team will advise you on whatever it is you need.
